Experimental/Post-rock collective These Shipwrecks launch their second release’Salt, Sulphur, Mercury’ (HRP010) and first full length album at The Bakery on Friday December 10. Here is a short interview with the band:
1: What is the current lineup for These Shipwrecks?
Current Lineup- Nathan Savage, Rhys Savage, John Lekias, Dean AnthoniszRecording Lineup for ‘Salt, Sulphur, Mercury’ - NS, RS, JL, Matt Aikten, Allie Clark
2:How would you compare this to your first release?
Our first release was a self pressed live recording taken from a film score we did for Artrage, one track ‘Leda’ clocking in around 40mins. We had a headlining gig coming up so we thought wed take the opportunity to release something for the night. The shiny silver cardboard sleeves glue melted all to quickly and i think we sold about 5 on the night, there might even be a few still floating around at Dada’s.
This new album ‘Salt, Sulphur, Mercury’ is our first studio release. The second time we have been into a studio with some time up our sleeves to churn out the ideas we have had floating around from the early years of the band as the first attempt we undertook in 2008 never saw the light of day. Most of the instrumentation was done live with some overdubs occurring later in the year.
3:Tell us a bit about the recording process for ‘Salt, Sulphur, Mercury’
Recorded by Max Ducker at Cellar Sessions North Perth over a few days in mid 2009 documenting ideas conceived between 2006 and 2009. Then overdubbed and mixed in scattered sessions over the following year.
4:How would the band describe its style and who are some of the bands influences?
Its always difficult to describe the band. We have been labelled experimental, psychedelic, noise, drone, meandering etc. Elements of those things do pop up, but in essence we play a vaguely structured form of rock normally revolving around one or a few notes. Our influences are everything, differing between individual members. we are all into music.
These Shipwrecks launch Salt, Sulphur, Mercury’ Friday 10th December with support from Maurice Flavel, Usurper Of Modern Medicine, Brown, Mongrel Country and Astral Travel. $10 at the door or $15 with a copy of the cd
